چکیده

We design approximation algorithms for Unique Games when the constraint graph admits good low diameter graph decomposition. For the Max-2Link problem in Kr-minor free graphs, when there is an assignment satisfying 1 − ε fraction of constraints, we present an algorithm that produces an assignment satisfying 1−O(rε) fraction of constraints, with the approximation ratio independent of the alphabet size. A corollary is an improved approximation algorithm for the Max-Cut problem for Kr-minor free graphs. For general Unique Games in Kr-minor free graphs, we provide another algorithm that produces an assignment satisfying 1−O(r √ ε) fraction of constraints. Our approach is to round a linear programming relaxation to find a minimum subset of edges that intersects all the inconsistent cycles. We show that it is possible to apply the low diameter graph decomposition technique on the constraint graph directly, rather than to work on the label extended graph as in previous algorithms for Unique Games. The same approach applies when the constraint graph is of genus g, and we get similar results with r replaced by log g in the Max-2Link problem and by √ log g in the general problem. The former result generalizes the result of GuptaTalwar for Unique Games in the Max-2Link case, and the latter result generalizes the result of Trevisan for general Unique Games.

Approximating CSPs with global cardinality constraints using SDP hierarchies

This work is concerned with approximating constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) with an additional global cardinality constraints. For example, Max Cut is a boolean CSP where the input is a graph G = (V, E) and the goal is to find a cut S ∪ S̄ = V that maximizes the number of crossing edges, |E(S , S̄ )|. The Max Bisection problem is a variant of Max Cut with an additional global constraint tha...

On the Complexity of Unique Games and Graph Expansion

Understanding the complexity of approximating basic optimization problems is one of the grand challenges of theoretical computer science. In recent years, a sequence of works established that Khot’s Unique Games Conjecture, if true, would settle the approximability of many of these problems, making this conjecture a central open question of the field. The results of this thesis shed new light o...

Approximating the Shapley Value via Multi-Issue Decomposition

The Shapley value provides a fair method for the division of value in coalitional games. Motivated by the application of crowdsourcing for the collection of suitable labels and features for regression and classification tasks, we develop a method to approximate the Shapley value by identifying a suitable decomposition into multiple issues, with the decomposition computed by applying a graph par...

On zero divisor graph of unique product monoid rings over Noetherian reversible ring

Let $R$ be an associative ring with identity and $Z^*(R)$ be its set of non-zero zero divisors.  The zero-divisor graph of $R$, denoted by $Gamma(R)$, is the graph whose vertices are the non-zero  zero-divisors of  $R$, and two distinct vertices $r$ and $s$ are adjacent if and only if $rs=0$ or $sr=0$.  In this paper, we bring some results about undirected zero-divisor graph of a monoid ring o...

New Tools for Graph Coloring

How to color 3 colorable graphs with few colors is a problem of longstanding interest. The best polynomial-time algorithm uses n colors. There are no indications that coloring using say O(log n) colors is hard. It has been suggested that lift and project based SDP relaxations could be used to design algorithms that use n colors for arbitrarily small > 0. We explore this possibility in this pape...
